SIRE Compliance: Why It Matters for Your Company
Colombia’s Migración Colombia requires all companies employing foreigners to register as employers in the SIRE system (Sistema de Información de Registro de Extranjeros). This is not optional — it is a legal obligation that applies to every Colombian entity, regardless of size or sector, that has a foreign national on its payroll or under a service arrangement.
Once registered, the company must report each employee’s PFE (Permiso de Fijación de Extranjero) event when the foreign national begins working and the PRE event when they depart or terminate the work relationship. These reports must be submitted within strict timeframes set by Migración Colombia. Non-compliance — whether from a missed PFE, an unreported PRE, or outdated employee records — results in fines that can significantly exceed the cost of proper ongoing management.
Migraciones.co monitors all SIRE obligations for your company as part of our ongoing corporate service. We set up the employer registration, coordinate initial event reporting, and maintain all records current throughout each employee’s tenure in Colombia. Your HR team is notified only when action is required on your side — everything else is handled by us.
